He has been a member of the VETEC Small Business Training Advisory Committee since its inception. 

Major Achievements

David has been involved in innovative approaches to entrepreneurship and enterprise development since 1977. His work on enterprise development has been the subject of papers presented at international conferences.

In addition to consulting to clients he has produced both courses and manuals on business and strategic planning; management skills assessment instruments. In addition David has co-developed and runs workshops on creative thinking, strategic thinking, leadership, working in groups, and group facilitation.

David’s roots are in agriculture –having been involved on the family’s broadacre farm in Africa.

Projects include

  • Co-director of the Queensland Rural Industry Training Council’s Leadership Program
  • Produced strategic plans for Queensland Rural Industry Training Council and the Sub Tropical Dairy Program
  • Co-produced the Business Plan for Future Profit-a farm management planning program
  • Author and facilitator of "Future Focus" a planning workshop to assist producers define the future direction of their business and then assess their management development needs to achieve their goals.
  • Author and facilitator of "Lions and Gazelles" a diagnostic guide for retail, manufacturing and service industries
  • Co author of "The impact of an enterprise program on rural youth development" published by Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation
  • Co-author of the Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority’s Business Planning Guide.
  • Principal author of the Queensland Rural Business Management Skills Strategy.
  • Principal author of the Queensland Small Business Management Skills Strategy.

  • Planned and managed the development of the first owner - occupied industrial park in Southern Africa.

David is known for his skill in encouraging and empowering clients to develop their strategic thinking, entrepreneurship and leadership skills. His conceptual thinking skills are called upon to contribute to assist clients identify and implement practical, cost effective but innovative solutions to challenges.
     

What David does best

RESEARCH

Researched the learning needs of a group of producers who have undertaken leadership courses.

Extensive attitudinal research with primary producers with information used to develop the Future Profit Business Plan and the Rural Business Management Skills Strategy.

Survey of small business owners’ perceptions of the impediments to skill development, (written instrument and focus groups) for the Queensland Small Business Management Skills Strategy.

Survey, using focus groups, of primary producers to determine behaviour patterns in selecting learning strategies, based on their concept of value.

Focus group survey of primary producers to determine attitudes to self assessment instruments which measure leadership and business skills.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project managed the development of the first owner occupied Industrial Estate in Southern Africa

Founded and managed the Tasmanian Centre for the Development of Entrepreneurs

Project managed projects funded by RIRDC and DETYA.

ESTABLISHING NETWORKS

Established chain networks between black entrepreneurs and a mining conglomerate- Anglovaal Limited in South Africa

Established "Network of Entrepreneurs" in Tasmania
